Welcome to this blog I'm gonna start doing! If you didn't know me before reading this: wow, I'm surprised this worked, but I'm glad you're here. If you did know me before, I'd like to explain a little bit of why I'm doing this. For both cases, here's a small intro before we get into it.
I usually introduce myself first as a musician. It's the thing I've been aspiring to for as long as I can remember, and has taken many forms. I mainly produce and DJ techno music, but love to dabble in other genres and even things outside of dance music (news to come about a special project I've been working on with some old friends). Outside of that I am a senior software engineer for a very prominent audio software company. Before that I was getting my PhD in Chemical Physics. So there are a few primary things I've learned to do in this life, which i can word simply as:
1. write and play music
2. write code and develop software
3. do math and science.
I've been lucky enough to integrate all of these learnings in direction towards the grand goal of making a living from music. With that said, and considering that I have started this post with introducing myself as a musician, I would not consider myself to have yet achieved the higher lofting goal of making a living from music primarily as an artist. This is a difficult task, as many people could guess or know firsthand. It is also the primary reason for me starting this blog.
In trying to have a music career, the odds are constantly against you. It's likely no secret to any person that pursues any form of artistry that the goalposts are constantly shifting. There are new social media platforms, new trends, and new audiences emerging constantly. There is simply not enough time to stay on top of all of it. Especially when so many of us have alternative primary sources of income, because of course we all need to eat and have shelter. On top of that, humans are over-saturated with content these days. So how can we demand attention from a population to look at, listen to, or feel our art?
Well, I'm hoping to use this blog to do something relatively simply. I have not figured out how yet, so this is going to be a live experiment y'all can watch or not watch play out. My goals are to use this as a way of organizing how I communicate with everyone. That way I can occasionally make short forms of a blog post written here in some appropriate form to post on the social platforms (photos, music, video, maybe just words, idk!). The goal would be to direct people here if they actually want to dig in a bit more, listen to the music I'm making and promoting, go to a show I'm playing, or read a classic Cory rant. Will start an email chain, etc. if you sign up below. These things would be for myself and organizing my life as much as they would be for getting my work and art out to the world.
So what can you expect from reading these posts? I am going to basically write about whatever I feel like, which usually comes from the three bullets above. They will likely be in the form of Cory Rants as I like to define them in my heads. Some examples of topic categories under the three "things" I've learned a lot about:
1. Music, music production, DJing, playing instruments, struggles as a musician, idk all the music things
2. Audio Development, being an audio dev, C++, learning web development (something I'm actively doing), making this website more configurable, idk all the dev things
3. Cool mathematics I read about, cool science going on, public outreach regarding science, idk all the science and maths things.
So let's see how this works out, together. I'm not going to claim I know what I'm doing here, but definitely going to try it. Should be a little bit easier to manage than doing a podcast....I think.
